Findlater Wine & Spirit Group was honoured to welcome Miguel A. Torres to Ireland for a short but busy two-day visit in October.

Mr. Torres spent his first day meeting and tasting with the Irish on-trade, including the sommeliers of Michelin-starred restaurants, before hosting an intimate lunch the next day in The Shelbourne‘s historic Constitution Room with a handful of key journalists. He finished off his trip with a well-received, warm-hearted consumer masterclass to over 50 people hosted by O’Brien’s Wines in the modern Marker Hotel.

At all events he spoke passionately about his family, his company, its wines, and his concerns for the environment, the latter being a constant source of concern for winemakers across the world in recent decades.

Though Bodegas Torres is perhaps most well known for its popular Viña Sol and Sangre de Toro brands, the wines tasted at each event showcased their extensive range of critically-acclaimed premium and regional wines such as Milmanda, Fransola, the new Purgatori and, of course, the famous Mas La Plana.

Mr. Torres, who recently celebrated his 75th birthday, is the president of the company that bears his name. He is best known for truly revolutionising Spanish winemaking in many ways: by thoroughly modernising the winemaking process, introducing “international varieties” such as Cabernet Sauvignon, reviving almost-extinct local varietals, and effectively promoting Spanish wine across the world, amongst many other achievements.

Founded in 1870, the reins of Bodegas Torres have always be passed down from generation to generation. Miguel A. Torres is the fourth generation in this famous winemaking dynasty, while his children Miguel Torres Maczassek, now General Manager of the group, and Mireia Torres Maczassek, Director of the Torres Priorat & Jean Leon wineries as well as being chief winemaking consultant for the Torres group, are the fifth generation to be involved.
